Then, some aspiring contract killer calling himself "the Hook" murdered Brand in the midst of an especially death-defying feat. For most of us, such a tragedy would close the book on our very short and tumultuous lives. 

But not for Deadman. While floating in the space between physicality and ethereality, the Hindu god Rama Kushna granted Boston's spirit the ability to possess any living being.

Brand used that ability to divine his murderer's identity, and continued using the gift to scare the absolute crabgrass out of magically-inclined ne'er-do-wells.
