In the 12-issue maxi-series, Marvel Superheroes Secret Wars, Spider-Man was transported to an alien world to do battle with equally transported heroes and ne'er-do-wells.

Yes, the experience was hellish, but a wondrous alien device replaced his war-ravaged costume with some very sleek, very stealthy black and white threads. 

Unfortunately, said threads were conscious, jealous, and always hungry. They also preferred the moniker "Venom" over "Peter's other costume."
