Long before smartphones were how everybody communicated and replaced talking with texts, people would have to use landlines or payphones to make a call. A contact list was a literal list of names and numbers that you wrote down. So, having a pager meant you were a big deal. People could call the pager number, you’d get a buzz like a Panera Bread buzzer and find a phone to call them back. State of the art.
